Searching for paid employment

Sometimes volunteers, clients and workers look for paid work. These resources may help them find a job they will be happy with.

Community groups sometimes help their volunteers, clients and workers find other work. These resources may help them find a job they will be happy with.

Your library

Your local library has a wealth of information for you. Look under "employment" in their subject catalogue (or ask a librarian!) Here are a few books with a New Zealand angle:

  • "How to get the job you want" by Rob Harris, published by Reed (1999)
  • "Job winning in New Zealand: how to get the job you want today" by Murray McLachlan, published by Penguin Books (1999)
  • "Supported employment in New Zealand: getting the job done" by Garth Bennie, published by Network Publications (1996)
  • "The New Zealand job finder's handbook" by Victor Flagg, published by Harper Collins, (1992)
  • "Writing successful New Zealand style CVs" by Douglas Pitcher, published by Shoestring Publications (c1998)

The Internet

The Internet has a huge amount of information on this topic, which can be overwhelming as much of it more relevant to US than to New Zealand. The author of "What color is my parachute?" has put together a good website www.jobhuntersbible.com which is mostly relevant to New Zealand conditions as well.

A good technique to use with the internet is to start with someone who has weeded out a lot of the possible links — eg these webpages:

    Careers on Line
This Australian website, is an excellent starting point for people who do not know what career path they want to take. The site contains some useful exercises to help clarify abilities, interests, values, attitudes etc. It is quite comprehensive and could provide useful information to assist with decisions about choosing a career. Free registration required to use the site.
    Career Opportunities New Zealand

    Careers Service KiwiCareers

Careers Service also offers Career Point, a freephone service, 0800 222 733, "on careers information, job descriptions, course information, training option, occupational details and labour market information". You can also access this service by emailing careerpoint@careers.govt.nz.
    Manpower Services
