New manual on the measurement of volunteer work

The Center for Civil Society Studies at Johns Hopkins University has produced this official International Labour Organization (ILO) manual, which calls on national statistical agencies to measure the extent and value of volunteer work as part of their regular labour force surveys or other statistical systems.

The manual serves as a companion to the United Nations Handbook on Nonprofit Institutions, which the Center developed previously in cooperation with the United Nations Statistics Division.

The objective of the manual is to improve and make available data on a significant form of work that is growing in importance but that is often ignored or rarely captured in traditional economic statistics. It will make it possible to portray the full economic weight and impact of the civil society sector around the world, and make more effective use of its resources and talents.
