Human (people) sustainability
A strong sustainable community or voluntary group has a strong sense of community, shares values and has a common vision for the future. To do this it must have skilled leaders, good governance, good planning and access to funding, knowledge and other resources.
It includes capacity building, networking, cultural sustainability, sustaining boards and committees, as well as volunteers and staff. The websites and other resources in this guide offer ways to achieve this vision.
Capacity building
Capacity building is forward looking and this is why it is important to sustainability of community organisations. It is a way to help groups to plan ahead in terms of skills and knowledge. Planning is essential to sustainable management
Capacity building means development work that strengthens the ability of community organisations and groups to build their structures, systems, people and skills so that they are better able to:
- define and achieve their objectives, and
- engage in consultation,
- planning,
- manage community projects and
- take part in partnerships and community enterprises.
It includes aspects of training, organisations and personnel development and resource building, organised in a planned and self-conscience manner, reflecting the principles of empowerment and equality. (from "Building Community Strengths", listed under Resources.)
