Free Māori spell checker removes barriers to reo proofing tools
Stalwart of Māori ICT, Mr Karaitiana Taiuru has announced the release of an updated version of Te Ngutu Kura free Māori spell checker, a decade since he relased the first version of Te Ngutu Kura.
The new version works across a variety of applications such as Facebook, web browsers, Microsoft Office, Macintosh, Linux and several other applications, with imediate plans for mobile phone spell checkers and predictive texting.
Historically, Māori spell checkers have been primarily for Windows-based Microsoft Office applications, resulting in a large part of the population having no access to Māori langugage proofing tools. Also, Māori spell checkers were only based on dictionary entries, meaning some sugestions may not accurately reflect daily spelling.
Te Ngutu Kura began with a source list of over 125,000 dictioanry entries, and then was cross-referenced against Māori frequency word lists compiled from online texts and converstaions.
The end result is a list of over 58,000 words that will enable proofing on most computer and web-based applications.
