Website provides information and advice about new copyright law
InternetNZ has created a website to provide people and organisations with the information and help they need to understand the new Copyright (Infringing File Sharing) Amendment Act 2011.
The new law comes into force on 1 September 2011, though copyright infringements start counting under the new law from 11 August.
Under the new law, the first two copyright infringements will incur warning notices and then, following the third notice, the copyright owner can take the Internet account holder to the Copyright Tribunal.
Depending upon circumstances, the minimum penalty is $275 and maximum $15,000, payable to the copyright owner.
The 3 Strikes NZ website covers the basics of the new law and features advice for individuals and organisations to help reduce the risks.
It is important that all organisations understand the implications of the law as it is the Internet account holder who is liable, will get any notices, and could be ultimately fined by the Copyright Tribunal.
The 3 Strikes site and associated social media will also provide a hub for the collective wisdom and experience of everyone to help fellow Kiwis.
