Nine Steps to Effective Governance

'Nine Steps to Effective Governance' is a best practice guide by Sport and Recreation New Zealand (SPARC) based on research by Boardworks International in 2003 and 2004.

This practical  governance resource covers a wide range of governance functions: defining the role of the board; induction;  board meetings; planning; board and CEO evaluation; and succession planning.

There is also a set of 9 Quick Reference cards (Adobe PDF 248 KB) available.

Nine Steps to Effective Governance - Resources

This volume of resources adds to the information released in the Nine Steps to Effective Governance publication. This publication outlines sample policies for the governing process and the appropriate linkages between the board and the professional staff. As with all sample documents, there is no one right answer and the application of these guidelines will necessarily vary by organisation. Simple drafting of policies will not in itself enhance governance. A good framework, combined with a clear strategic plan, is the fundamental base for functional governance.
