Where to find the kit:

Online:

The Kit can be viewed on or downloaded from the CommunityNet Aotearoa website: www.community.net.nz/how-toguides/crk/

Print Copies: 

A limited number of print copies are being distributed to a range of advisory, support and community information centres where it will be available for use. The Kit has been designed so individual sections or sub-sections can be easily photocopied.

These include

  • community law centres,
  • councils of social services,
  • volunteer centres,
  • local and central government advisors,
  • Heartlands offices,
  • MPs' electorate offices and
  • national umbrella and support agencies, and the
  • regional offices of both Family and Community Services and the Department of Internal Affairs. 

Please note: Print copies are not available for general distribution to community groups.

Summary of Contents

The Kit includes the following 12 sections.  Each section has a number of sub-sections, each of which can be copied or downloaded separately.

  1. Getting Started.  This section gives a brief background to the community and voluntary sector in New Zealand.  It outlines typical stages of community group development, and what to consider before setting up a new group.
  2. Planning.  Covers strategic and operational planning, project management, risk management, monitoring and evaluation for community groups.  It explains planning terminology and provides a range of tools and templates to use.
  3. Organisational structures. Provides information to help people set up, run and wind up the main types of community groups, such as incorporated societies and charitable trusts.  The section also introduces the role of the Charities Commission.
  4. Governance. The section introduces governance issues for community groups and looks at the roles and functions of the governing body or board.  It includes practical tools and checklists for committee and board members.
  5. Policies.  Introduces a framework and templates for developing policies for community organisations, and provides some examples of policies and procedures.
  6. Financial management.  Covers financial planning, book keeping, annual reporting and tax matters for community groups.
  7. Raising funds.  Some guidelines and tools to help groups with fundraising and applying for funding.
  8. Employment. Includes checklists and sample documents for recruiting and managing both paid employees and volunteers.
  9. Communication. Covers communications planning, working with the media and communication with, or lobbying government.
  10. Meetings. Includes checklists for the effective running of both formal and informal. meetings.
  11. Record keeping. Covers filing systems, checklists of what records need to be kept and information privacy issues for community groups.
  12. Information technology.   This section covers planning and budgeting for IT, software and hardware and computer, the Internet and email, and computer security. It includes a comprehensive glossary of IT words.

Each section includes a detailed list of contents, a directory of other resources or places to go for further information, and some definitions of words used.
