CACOM is based in the University of Technology Sydney and was established in 1990. It provides training and undertakes and disseminates research on the Australian community sector and its management. It also operates the Asian Third Sector Research Unit.
Research interests include
- Social Capital (which grew out of requests for CACOM to use its research expertise to help local community development functions survive),
- Australian Nonprofit Database,
- Career Paths in the Third Sector,
- Asian Third Sector Research Unit (including the Asia Pacific Philanthropy Information Network and third sector governance in six Asian countries).
The website includes details and an order form for CACOM's publications, which include: over sixty working papers reporting research on Australia's community sector, volunteering and philanthropy; proceedings of the first national conference on community management; and an annual guide for management resources for non-profit organisations.
