Campaign against loan sharks

ACORN (Association of Community Organisations for Reform Now - www.acorn.org) in the United States has been leading a successful campaign against predatory loan sharks who target low income people.  Similar problems with loan companies occur in New Zealand.

Progress in the fight against predatory lending documents ACORN's achievements in its campaign since 1999.  ACORN is an active network of groups which doesn't hesitate to use peaceful, direct action tactics when it will help a campaign.  They have a non arrest policy and prefer to use mass actions rather than 'individual stunts'.  They have entered loan company offices with large numbers of people to draw attention to predatory lending and to put pressure on local and national government for law changes, with a high level of success.
