Staff: Human Resources Management

The people who do the work in an organisation - whether they are workers, managers, administrators, volunteers or board members - are crucial to providing quality services and maintaining an organisation. In the community sector particularly, where so much of the work is based on personal relationships and connections, being able to find and keep good staff should be a high priority. In an environment of worker and skills shortages, good human resources management and a happy, healthy and safe workplace will go a long way to developing a great team.

Produced by the Australian Capital Territories Council of Social Services (ACTCOSS), this section of their Organisations Information Kit will be useful to New Zealand organisations, with information on:

  • Employment Contracts and Agreements
  • Recruitment and Staff Development
  • Performance Management
  • Further Human Resources Information

Managing People

This information is published by UK organisation, VolResource, and covers management concepts relating to people issues. Though written for UK-based organisations, the information should be useful as an overview for New Zealand groups and can be applied to volunteers as well as paid staff.

The site makes the point that users really need to do some serious reading, course work or gain experience 'on the job' if they want to develop people management skills properly.

Producing Job Descriptions

If an organisation does not know what job it wants done, then it may recruit the wrong person. Job descriptions are essential aids to recruitment, job evaluation, induction, performance management, and staff development reviews. This overview by Massey University’s Barrie Humphreys is suitable for community organisations and businesses alike.
