New online guide to 90-day trial employment periods

Employment Relation Service,

From 1 March 2009, employers who employ 19 or fewer employees are able to employ new employees on a trial period of up to 90 calendar days.

To help answer questions about the new legislation, the Department of Labour's Employment Relation Service has published an information web page:

www.ers.dol.govt.nz/relationships/trialperiod.html

The page contains an explanation of how trial periods work and answers questions such as:

  • If I am an employee, will the trial period apply to me?
  • If I am an employer, will I be able to offer a trial period to new employees?
  • What services are available if there is a problem during the trial period?

The service also offers a printer-friendly fact sheet.

If you have further questions or concerns related to trial periods, please contact the Department of Labour on freephone 0800 20 90 20.
