Advocacy on-line

The internet and email are increasingly being used to educate and inform people about campaigns.  Here are a series of websites that provide some tools and resources for not for profit organisations to develop effective internet communications for their campaigns.

  • Net Action's Virtual Activist Training Guide: a beginner's guide to using email, developing a website, online media, membership lists, technology planning, privacy issues, as well as general resources.  Very practical and helpful.
  • Designing Effective Action Alerts for the Internet: Want to avoid your next action alert being deleted as spam?  Then read this clear summary of good practice, such as: keep it simple, don't preach, get your facts right, and most importantly don't mistake email for organising.
  • Strategic Communications in the Digital Age: Thorough advice from the Benton Foundation (a US organisation that assists not for profits use the internet) on planning a good on line communications strategy, including advice to help funders see the relevance of investing in technology.  Good case studies can be found on this site too.
  • Building on-line communities: guidelines for developing on line discussion forums, looking in particular at the need to adequately resource time and people in order to make them work well.
