The Digital Future Summit 2.0

On 28 and 29 November 2007, over 540 business, community and government leaders, met in Auckland to discuss New Zealand’s digital future.

Broadcast live across the Internet and via Second Life, many more New Zealanders still were able to participate in the Digital Future Summit 2.0.

As a key part of the refresh of the Digital Strategy, the Summit was an important opportunity for a national conversation on the direction and shape of New Zealand’s digital future. The feedback from the Summit has been both positive and constructive.

Speakers

Thanks go to the many speakers who shared their wisdom and inspiration.

Excellent feedback has been received on all, with stand out speakers including Chris Anderson, editor of Wired and writer of The Long Tail, Sam Morgan CEO and founder of TradeMe, and expat kiwi Andy Lark, Vice-President of Dell Computers.

Special thanks go to Summit Chair, Rod Oram, whose leadership and thought-provoking commentary enlivened the Summit from start to finish, and TUANZ who produced a standout event on behalf of the government.

Summit themes

As you are aware, networked laptops on every table at the conference provided an opportunity for you as participants to comment on and discuss digital themes and issues throughout the Summit. This information provided the material for the final session – a workshop on the six key digital themes coming out of the two days.

You are now invited, and to encourage others, to provide feedback on these “challenges” through the online forums.

Refresh next steps

The government put out a call to action to participate in the refresh of the Digital Strategy. From the 40 stakeholder workshops and discussions and sector facilitated events in the lead up to the Summit, online forums, the blog, and the Summit itself a great deal of information has been gathered.

Many thanks to those who answered the call, and those who organised workshops with us.

The focus now is on evaluating that information, and finalising the vision and key digital themes of the Draft Digital Strategy 2.0, which the government will be consulting on during April 2008.
