This strategy is the government's vision for New Zealand to become a world-leader at using information and technology to realise our economic, social, and cultural goals. This whole-of-government strategy has been developed by several departments and has been coordinated by the Ministry of Economic Development. It provides a framework to encourage "smarter" use and uptake of ICTs by communities, businesses and government.
In June 2004, Associate Minister of Information Technology, David Cunliffe released the government's draft Digital Strategy for consultation.
Over 190 submissions were received and were supportive of the Strategy and its vision. Overall, the draft strategy has been greeted with significant enthusiasm. Submitters acknowledged that the Strategy provides an integrated and cohesive framework for existing and future initiatives that encourage the uptake and effective use of ICTs. They concluded that ICTs are versatile tools that can be used to acquire, share and create information. This will ensure New Zealand can create an economic climate that supports our social, cultural and environmental goals.
David Cunliffe said he was delighted with the support given to the strategy. The government is looking forward to incorporating feedback and finalising actions for the Digital Strategy, which was released on May 16th, 2005.
The Ministry has worked with other departments to collate and analyse submissions. These have been summarised.
