News from the Community Sector Taskforce Meeting on Friday March 4th:

The inaugural AGM for the new entity will be held during the weekend of Friday May 27 to Sunday May 29.  Details of the times, location and venue will be in a future Panui.

Other decisions made at the meeting:

  • The Trust Deed for the new entity was finalised and only awaits legal signoff.
  • The Taskforce will appoint two Interim Trustees (one Tangata Whenua and one Tangata Tiriti) to activate the Deed. The Interim Trustees will resign at the AGM when the Trust’s Inaugural Trustees are appointed.
  • The selection process for Inaugural Trustees will follow the Two House Model and nominations will be open to all people working in community, voluntary and tangata whenua organisations. The process will be managed by an independent selection panel.
  • A total of twelve Trustees will be sought; six Trustees selected through Tangata Whenua and six through Tangata Tiriti processes.  Within each group of six, one third each will be appointed for one, two and three years following the inaugural AGM.

The process for appointing inaugural Trustees is an important opportunity to demonstrate to the Sector how the Tiriti/Treaty Framework and the two-house model works in the interests of the Sector.

Diagram of the new entity. It shows two houses - Tangata Tiriti and Tanagata Whenua - meeting in a third combined house. The two houses are both made up of organisations, regions, sectors; and umbrella organisations, marae, and whanau, hapu and iwi as appropriate. Trustees provide leadership, deal with national level issues and protect the kaupapa, supported by staff.

Community Sector Taskforce Report Released

Co-chairs of the Community Sector Taskforce, Pat Seymour and Gill Genet, have just released this publication which backgrounds the history and developments to the end of 2004.

“It is great reading” says Gill “and it gives the background which has led to the formation a new legal entity to co-ordinate and be a focal point for community, voluntary and Tangata Whenua organisations on Sector wide issues”.

The Community and Voluntary Sector is a keystone of NZ society, with its contribution reaching every aspect of our environment and our lives.  It is a diverse and complex sector, ranging from small self help support groups, to Iwi mandated organizations. It delivers government funded services and includes local community clubs for people from different countries to substantial services managing international aid or migrant services.  Local environmental care groups to national organizations and networks focused on advocating for environmental protection are also part of the Sector.

“Despite this incredible diversity, there are many common threads, issues and experiences which bind us” says Pat Seymour. “And it is this recognition by people in the sector, supported by government that will reflect the Tiriti/Treaty of Waitangi and the aspirations of all peoples in the Sector.”

The completed report is an essential read for anyone with an interest in the development of a national entity to work with the community and voluntary sector.

It describes the underlying philosophy and structure based on Te Tiriti o Waitangi/the Treaty of Waitangi.  The purpose of the new entity is to co-ordinate and be a focal point for  community, voluntary and Tangata Whenua organisations on Sector wide issues.

A copy of the report will be available for you to view on www.community.net.nz early next week.
