CommunityNet Tip: TinyURL

There's a big problem with long URLs (web addresses): they quite often get 'broken' when you include them in an email; no-one wants to include them in printed material because they're too long to fit a page and anyway a reader would have an awful job typing them into a web browser, and you can't recite them during a phonecall.

Take the URL for the CommunityNet Aotearoa Maori links page as an example (Webmaster's note: This horrible URL is generated by our Content Management System. We'll try — again — to get this shortened.): http://www.community.net.nz/Links/link.htm?g={31BC0202-E240-4788-90FD-E77B71EE991F}.

Try clicking it in your email program (if you're reading this in an email newsletter). Does it work? Chances are, it doesn't because the email software has broken it up over several lines and added spaces or return characters along the way.

Fortunately, it's easy to transform that long and unwieldy URL into a nice short one for including in an email, text message or printed brochure, or explaining in a phone call:

tinyurl.com.

Take that long URL we had earlier and paste it into the form on the TinyURL page, click the Make TinyURL! button and something like this will be produced:

tinyurl.com/hyyl6.

That's reduced it from a problematic 83 characters to an easy 24. Try the above URL and it should take you directly to our Maori Links list.

Next time you want to tell a friend about a cool web page you've visited take a moment to transform a long URL to a Tiny URL before you send the email or make the phone call.

Website Tip: ZoomIn maps

[June 2006] Let people know how to get to your offices or public event.

If you're running an event, or just want people to be able to find your offices, you may like to provide a map. A New Zealand map service called ZoomIn can help you out with that.

First visit the site and use the Search box to locate the street, or even building number and street, for example, the home of Communitynet Aotearoa, the Department of Internal Affairs, is at 46 Waring Taylor Street, Wellington.

ZoomIn easily finds that address, and displays a map, with a location marker. If I create a free account and log in I can permanently add a marker and description for that location, making it even easier for others to find. Try a ZoomIn search now for Department of Internal Affairs and you should find it immediately.

Once you've found your location click the link in the Use this map section at bottom left (you may need to scroll down). The page you go to explains in full how to add maps to your website or simply links to maps. Or you can copy the link it gives you and include it in emails, texts or printed matter. Here's the link I created:

www.zoomin.co.nz/nz/wellington/wellington+central/waring+taylor+street/46/-department+of+internal+affairs.

Of course, it would be sensible to use this month's Communitynet Tip: TinyURL to make that URL a lot shorter, like this: tinyurl.com/efdu6.

Go further and add a photo of your location so visitors know exactly how to find you. Here's an example of a Wellington landmark, with photo and description: tinyurl.com/o2ylu.
