Student Job Search,
For 27 years, Student Job Search has been helping to improve the lives of the elderly community, by offering a quality and cost effective recruitment service to retirement village operators who are looking for staff to fill part time, casual and fixed term vacancies.
Marek Koliandr, Senior Marketing Assistant at SJS says "the key benefits for retirement village owners in using the SJS service is that we are able to provide them with experienced tertiary level students, many of whom are studying either medicine, health-care, care-giving or nursing at no cost to the village owner. SJS can also fill other roles from washing dishes to mowing lawns with students whose qualifications range from hospitality to landscape design.
SJS currently has a number of rest-home and care-giving jobs on their website. As an example, there is one Retirement Village owner in Northcote, who is currently advertising for a student to interact with and spend time talking to residents. The student will also help residents with daily tasks like dressing, showering and meals.
SJS is a not for profit organisation and their service is totally free.
Their service is further distinguished by the fact that SJS screens all applicants who show an interest in a job.
Tahlia Tini, Team Leader for the Auckland region, says "the screening process is vital, because we can make sure that the student's experiences, skills and motivations match what an employer is looking for."
Ms Tini is also quick to point out that in many cases these are working relationships that mean more to students than just a pay-check. Ms Tini says "A number of students have commented on the relationships they have formed with retired employers. There is a real opportunity for students to find mentors and benefit from their real world experience. It's the kind of life experience you can't learn from a text book."
Mr Koliandr is currently working with John Collyns, who is the Executive Director of the Retirement Village Association, to build a win-win partnership, where retirement village owners receive only the best candidates and a personalised service for free, and SJS can offer to students on their website (www.sjs.co.nz) not only the chance to grow their bank balances, but their life experience as well.
