Wi-Fi 'Live' at Tokomaru Bay

Tokomaru Bay Community Group Charitable Trust,

Tokomaru Bay has now launched an innovative new WiFi Broadband service that stretches over the whole bay area. Users can log-on wherever they are, whenever, no telephone lines needed!

The Tokomaru Bay Community Group Trust has launched this community initiative with the assistance of the 2020 Communications Trust, GisborneNet, Colvins Communications, E -Learning Tairawhiti, Te Runanga O Ngati Porou and the Gisborne District Council.

The network is optimized to support mobile broadband data as well as and mobile VoIP/VoWiFi. The network can be easily accessed with any Wi-Fi enabled device such as a laptop, PDA or cell phone (providing they have signed up for an account).

Trustee Georgina Johnson says that, in partnership with innovative Internet Service Providers (ISPs) like GisborneNet, we will be pushing the Wi-Fi service out to New Zealand’s savviest end-users from today in Tokomaru Bay. and the rest of the East Coast.

“This is our first foray into the consumer market and another step towards bringing people and technology closer and building towards technology savvy communities.

“Convergence means that New Zealanders want widespread, portable access to the internet, their email, voice data and more. The Tokomaru BayWi-Fi will deliver all that using a low-cost, high-value ‘user-pays’ business model that works.

“We have combined an innovative, open-access business model with a pragmatic and targeted deployment plan to deliver cost-effective mobile broadband access for locals, business travellers, tourists and rural towns throughout New Zealand.”

“GisborneNet is delighted to be a part of bringing better broadband access in rural areas to New Zealanders,” added trustee Ron Brice.

Tokmaru Bay is the first to ‘go-live’ in the phase one rollout, with the rest of the Tairawhiti rural communities waiting for this particular pilot to iron out any bugs and central Government to approve financing the project through the Broadband Initiative Fund.

Wi-Fi users will soon be able to access the service in nearly all locations around Te Tairawhiti – dependent on the funding application approval. Once approved roll out to communities will commence once a suitable community group is found to act as project driver.

“The simplicity and cost-effectiveness of the service means that East Coast residents expect strong take-up over the next three years, with a vision for targeted Broadband Wi-Fi coverage in every East Coast town by 2015.”
