The Personal Advocacy Trust Inc,
The Personal Advocacy Trust Inc (a charitable trust) was set up in 1967 by concerned parents to provide advocacy/friendship for their son or daughter with an intellectual disability after they died.
In exchange for a once-off fee (on a sliding scale dependent on age) we contract to provide advocacy for their son or daughter for the rest of their life.
An advocate visits for a couple of hours a month to ensure that things are as good as they can be and to speak up with and for the person about such things as abuse in the financial, health, sexual, relationships or other areas.
The service can provide some peace of mind for parents very aware of the vulnerability of their son or daughter.
Finances are an area where abuse often occurs - by staff in Homes, landladies or siblings. Our advocates have sorted out many problems including some which led to staff being fired. For example providing receipts and then removing the item after the audit has been completed; using a person’s eftpos card for their own purchases; gambling or credit card debt; high Bank fees.
