Glenys Baldick Memorial Award for an Emerging Leader in Health

Ministry of Health,

Accuro Health Insurance, ACC and the Ministry of Health are pleased to announce the establishment of the Glenys Baldick Memorial Award for an Emerging Leader in Health. The Award of $10,000 will fund educational and/or vocational development for the winner.

The Glenys Baldick Memorial Award is open to senior managers from ACC, the Ministry of Health, district health boards, DHB-funded organisations, primary health organisations and health-related NGOs. Candidates should have a substantial record of accomplishment in management, and be identified by their organisation as having the potential for further advancement to a senior executive/CEO role.

Glenys Baldick, the pioneering chief executive of Nelson Marlborough District Health Board (DHB), who headed the organisation through five health reforms, died in September 2006, aged 52, after a long illness.

At the time of her retirement through ill health in 2004, Glenys was the longest serving DHB chief executive in the country. She also undertook health reforms for the World Health Organisation in Mongolia and the South Pacific, tasks she enjoyed enormously. She was chair of the Health Service Welfare Society Board (predecessor of Accuro Health Insurance), from 2002 until her death.

Her work was recognised with many awards, including the More Business Woman of the Year Award in 1989, the Queen's Medal Suffragette Award, the Community Civic Award Marlborough 1989, the Companion of the Queen's Service Order, the Nelson Community Award and the New Zealand Institute of Management Human Resources Award. Despite her ill health, Glenys remained dedicated to delivering efficient, effective health services, serving on the West Coast DHB and continuing to work as Acting Chief Executive until a few weeks before she died.

The Glenys Baldick Memorial Award is an annual and ongoing grant in remembrance of Glenys’ contribution to the New Zealand health sector and her passion for supporting and developing future leaders.
