Vision-impaired woman celebrated for services to blind

Royal New Zealand Foundation of the Blind,

A vision-impaired Wellington woman was commended for her contribution to the blind community last Saturday, after dedicating nearly 30 years to promoting human rights and equality.

Robyn Hunt was awarded the Royal New Zealand Foundation of the Blind (RNZFB) Chairman’s Award. "I'm absolutely thrilled and delighted to be given this award because for me it's not just me that gets the award - it's all the people who've supported me to do the things that I've done and will go on doing," says Hunt.

A Human Rights Commissioner, Hunt was part of the team who negotiated the United Nations Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities in 2006.

Presenting the award, RNZFB Chairman Don McKenzie said, “In this year of great significance to persons with disabilities, the Foundation is proud to acknowledge and celebrate the many achievements of Robyn Hunt as an example of the values she lives.”

Each year the RNZFB's Chairman is faced with the challenging task of selecting one person who has made an outstanding contribution to the blind community through their professional and/or community service.
