Scammers Target NGO Sector

Various,

NZCOSS recently received an email inviting us to attend a conference in California and in Senegal, organised by the World Youth Organisation for Human Welfare. Donors of the Organising Committee would provide the air tickets and accommodation. The sender also asked us to spread the word to other NGOs. It all sounded rather fishy and of course a quick search on the internet verified that it was a scam, basically the latest version of the so-called Nigerian scams.

Hot on the heels of that scam, another message arrived warning us of an email doing the rounds. In this one an unnamed company is looking for charities to donate money to. This too is a scam.

We've also seen others that specifically target not-for-profit or voluntary sector organisations. It seems our sector may be becoming the focus of these scams. So — just as they asked us, we're spreading the word: BE WARNED — take nothing at face value and do your homework before responding to any request for help or wonderful offer that you receive via email. Google or other search engines will soon tell you all you need to know.
