Jam Radio: Community and Arts Radio on the Web

Jam Radio,

A new outlet for the future of sound has begun on Auckland’s North Shore. The webpage known as JamRadio is an online resource of locally made radio programmes. Punk, folk, blues, electronica, unsigned artists, interviews, arts reviews, literary readings and live recordings are just a mouse click away.

Jam Radio was seeded from a pressing need for musical and creative opportunities on the Shore. The Depot Artspace, a well established community gallery, facilitated the creation and development, firstly by constructing a radio room, then drawing on an extensive network of creative people. With the Depot’s constant encouragement and support the JamRadio site was able to be launched in June this year.

Sound media is the internet’s darling, in a society driven by MP3 culture. Busy lifestyles and rural isolation can mean that live-to-air radio is not always the practical option. The transportability of sound through alternative means is revolutionising the idea of community. A neighbourhood can encompass a global gathering of folks interested in a particular genre of music, for example. JamRadio programmes are made by the stations immediate physical community. Yet it caters for the world at large. Every fortnight a new round of programmes is uploaded to the site, and those programmes will be accessible for at least a month, often longer. Listeners tune in from Britain, Europe, the Americas, Australia and the Pacific.

The radio is designed as an inclusive space, where those interested in furthering themselves in the realms of sound can come and be involved. This can take the form of compiling a show, interviewing, learning sound engineering techniques, assisting live recordings, or writing a play or documentary. JamRadio applauds initiative and innovation, so all ideas are welcome for consideration.
