2006 Census results

Statistics New Zealand, National

New Zealand’s 2006 Census of Population and Dwellings was held on 7 March 2006. Final data from the 2006 Census is now available and can be accessed from the links on this page: www.stats.govt.nz/census/2006-census-data/default.htm.

More information will be released progressively throughout 2007.

Current topics include:

  • QuickStats About Population Mobility: where people (including overseas visitors) were on census night, who is most and least likely to move their usual residence, and population movements between areas (or internal migration) in the five years prior to the 2006 Census.
  • QuickStats About New Zealand's Population and Dwellings: facts and figures about the people in New Zealand, including information about age, sex, ethnicity and dwellings.
  • QuickStats National Highlights: highlights from the 2006 Census across a range of subjects, including information about Māori.
  • Regional Summary Tables: key information about people in New Zealand's regions, cities and districts (Excel format).
  • Final Counts: population and dwelling numbers for regions, cities, districts and area units (Excel format).
  • Classification Counts: key characteristics of the New Zealand population (Excel format).
