Report: Health and Disability Sector NGO Workforce Development

Health and Disability Sector NGO - Ministry of Health Working Group, National

In September 2005 the Health and Disability Sector NGO — Ministry of Health Working Group (NGO Working Group) hosted a Forum on workforce development. This and subsequent e-mails and comments to the NGO Working Group identified a number of concerns and issues regarding workforce development which were particularly important to NGOs.

As a result, earlier this year the NGO Working Group contracted Kirsty Peel to carry out a project on NGO workforce development. This project has involved consultation with DHBNZ, the Ministry of Health and NGOs.

We believe that Health and Disability Sector NGO Workforce Development — A report to the NGO Working Group written by Kirsty Peel, Health by Design Limited, 16 June 2006, is a valuable output. We consider many of the issues have either not been raised elsewhere or fully considered in other documents. Many of these issues are critical to the viability of the NGO sector, the quality of the services they deliver and, therefore to the governments vision and the health and well being of communities around New Zealand.

The NGO Working Group is sending the report to the Minister, the Ministry of Health, DHBNZ, NGOs and other key stakeholders. The NGO Working Group will also be using the report as a basis for crucial further discussions on these issues with all stakeholders.

We encourage you to use this report by sharing it with your colleagues, and using it as a basis for discussions related to workforce development planning, contracts, funding, professional development and risk management. We hope you will find it a useful resource in this way.
