A UN Secretary-General for We the Peoples: Civil society calls for a more democratic selection process.
By Vicente Garca-Delgado, CIVICUS UN Representative.
Kofi Annan's second and last term as UN Secretary-General will expire at the end of this year, and the process (if it can be called that) for the selection of his successor is already underway.
Unless basic notions of transparency and accountability find their way into the UN Security Council Chamber in the coming months, the next Secretary-General will be chosen, as usual, in near total darkness behind closed doors.
Even the Catholic Church, not necessarily a shining bastion of democratic practices, implements a more democratic procedure when selecting a new Pope: in 1179, Pope Alexander III decreed that all cardinals would have equal vote, with no veto power. This Eco Summit will focus on integrative aspects of all ecological science and its application under the general theme of "Ecological Complexity and Sustainability: Challenges and Opportunities for 21st-Century's Ecology".
The aim of this Eco Summit is to encourage a greater integration of both the natural and social sciences with the policy and decision-making community to develop a better understanding of the complex nature of ecological systems. This understanding will provide the basis for sustainable solutions to environmental problems.
We expect this meeting to attract the broadest representations of ecological organizations, ecologists and practitioners on ecological sustainability issues from all over the world.
We intend to show the unification and determination of our ecological community as a whole to maximize our commitment to use ecological knowledge and understanding to meet the challenges raised from the Earth Summit (1992), the World Summit on Sustainable Development (2002), and the United Nations 2005 Millennium Review Summit.
Visit the Eco Summit website at www.ecosummit2007.elsevier.com to learn more about the conference, find out about the key deadlines on submitting symposium and session proposals as well as abstracts for oral and poster presentations and sign up for Eco Summit Alerts.
A toolkit for researchers and civil society organisations.
Overseas Development Institute; Within the field of international development, perhaps it is not more communication of evidence that is needed, but rather better communication of evidence.
Towards this end, this toolkit presents 23 tools, divided into the categories of 'Planning', 'Packaging', 'Targeting' and 'Monitoring.'
The toolkit addresses how researchers and CSOs can best communicate evidence in order to inform or influence policy, to achieve their own stated development objectives or simply to make their own knowledge accessible and understandable to a wider audience.

Individual social enterprises are not getting the right kinds of capital at the right time. We must learn from, and collaborate with, the for-profit capital market, says Jed Emerson, Senior Fellow with Generation Foundation, of Generation Investment Management, in an interview with Alliance Magazine.
However, he argues it is not just a question of persuading mainstream investors to come to the table. Foundation money could take some of the risk and support the development of new financing streams.
