The Wellington People's Centre volunteered to organise people for a photo shoot for the website's brochures and posters. Here's some details about the Centre.
The Wellington People's Centre is the only one of its kind in the greater Wellington area.
It opened ten years ago following the initiative of a group of people on the Unemployment Benefit and the DPB, offering affordable, high quality services for people on benefits and low incomes. With the assistance of a similar Centre in Auckland, local church groups and other local community groups the vision has become a reality with the hope of becoming self-sustaining in the long-term. Since the establishment of the Centre it has developed from a part time service deliverer to a reputable Community Resource Centre. The Centre is maintained at no cost to anyone other than the members, who pay $130 per year membership fee and direct general donors.
Services provided include free medical care, counseling services, social English classes and benefit and workers rights advice; and affordable massage, dental, podiatry, acupuncture and hairdressing. The Benefit Rights Service and Workers Rights Service are also open to the public.
The Benefit Rights Service is well established in the Wellington area and has become a very reliable and sought-after resource by individuals, community groups and government agencies requiring information, training and advocacy in relation to the Department of Work and Income.
The Centre can be contacted on 04 3858596 or wprc@actrix.gen.nz
